Madhusudan Das worked tirelessly for the unification of all the Odia-speaking regions, which resulted in the formation of the state of Odisha on 1 April 1936, which is now celebrated as Utkal Diwas.
His father was Chaudhuri Raghunath Das and mother Parvati Devi. They initially named him Chaudhuri Govinda Ballav Das. He had two elder sisters and a younger brother named Chaudhuri. Gopal Ballav was a magistrate of Bihar and was the father of Ramadevi Chowdhury.
An accomplished writer and poet, his works in both English and Odia continue to inspire people. He was initially a member of the Indian National Congress, but later severed ties due to differences over the demand for a linguistic state.
Madhusudan Das served as the vice-president of the Utkal Sabha in 1889 and protested against the unjust salt tax laws of the British government before Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March.
In 1903, Das founded the Utkal Union Conference. Under the Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms, he was elected as a member of the Legislative Councils of Bihar and Odisha.
Madhusudan Das died on 4 February 1934. His birth anniversary is celebrated as ‘Lawyers’ Day’ in Odisha.
